VIDEOS OF TEACHING AND PEOPLE I HAVE MENTORED
Raphael Maranon Plays Kaija Saariaho’s Prés
Raphael Maron was a Junior at Roosovelt University and had never played an electronic work before and had limited experience with contemporary music in general, After a few weeks of mentoring him, using some exercises I had created to help him understand the connection between his playing and the sonic reaction, he not only gave a stellar performance, but also understood several of the extended techniques without being instructed by a cello teacher whatsoever. The exercises are designed to help players develop auditory kinesthesia with an interactive musical instrument. In this case, electronic effects the react to the playing of the cello.

Body Sample Player:
Another case study on the development of Auditory Kinesthesia, I worked withMabel Kwan and Andrew Tham (Megalaverne and Shirley) with the Body Sample Player. A Kinect2 camera tracks the motion of eight joint positions that then control the volume of eight looping samples. Simple technology, but with the potential for musical complexity and expressivity.
Here is me doing a performance with the system.
And here is me doing it with my collaborator Christopher Knowlton over the internet (control data is being sent over the internet to both performers using OSC protocol.
This video shows Megalaverne and Shirley performing with the system before and after I administer exercises.
